New Delhi
Move to check plastic degradation

Madhur Tankha

NEW DELHI: Symphony Environmental Limited, United Kingdom, on Thursday announced an exclusive distribution alliance with Priti Plastics Private Limited, the country’s largest manufacturers and exporters of plastic packaging material, for the launch of d2w -- the world’s most advanced bio-degradable plastic additive technology -- in India.

"Plastics can take up to 400 years to break down. Over 100,000 marine animals die annually from plastic entanglement. To preserve our planet’s environment, the d2w technology has been engineered to make plastic totally and safely disappear. Moreover, the technology ensures that no harmful residues are left floating in the environment. The technology is based on a very small amount of pro-degradant additive being introduced into conventional manufacturing process, thereby changing the behaviour of plastic. The degradation of plastic starts immediately after manufacture and will accelerate when exposed to heat, light or stress," said the Managing Director of Symphony Environmental Limited, U.K., Michael Laurier, at a press conference here.

"Oxo-biodegradable plastic does not bypass manufacturers of normal plastic products keeping the entire processing chain undisturbed. We believe that with the growing environmental consciousness in India, this technology will find many takers here. It has already been widely accepted in the United States, United Kingdom, Malta, Columbia and South Africa," added Mr. Laurier.

Priti Plastics Private Limited’s Chief Executive Officer Haresh Dugad said: ``The world over, policy makers have started recognising the advantages of using oxo-biodegradable plastics and it is high time we also accept its benefit and promote the use of this eco-friendly technology as it offers the optimum solution to the problems of plastic waste management."

The tie-up is aimed at providing cost-effective, high-quality packaging material and contribute towards a cleaner and greener environment in the country.
